Generator Step-Up Testing and Bushing Replacement

During routine outage testing and maintenance, SCPS found that a generator step-up transformer’s bushing was marginal and very nearing end of life. The customer had a spare bushing available and requested SCPS replace this bushing during the outage window. An oil rig was brought on-site within 48 hours to drain the transformer to allow for the bushing swap out and the work was completed without becoming critical path in the outage window. Later, SCPS returned to replace the other two bushings and re-gasket the transformer as a longer-term maintenance plan.

Emergency Support of SF6 Breaker Failure

A customer reached out to SCPS when an operator had inadvertently closed a ground switch in an 18kV SF6 generator breaker at full speed no-load conditions. SCPS had an engineer on-site within 24 hours and found that the operation had ruptured the SF6 tank and spread toxic biproducts throughout the breaker cubicle and down through the bus duct. SCPS immediately began efforts to clean the bus duct and get parts to site to repair the breaker. Parts were not readily available, so the team used their connections to source them from overseas. A breaker replacement that would usually take months to complete was done in approximately four weeks to get the facility back online.

        Large Engineering Study

Our engineering team is well versed and comfortable performing large power system studies. Our team has recently completed a large campus in downtown Boston where we performed short-circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies for a major university. These reports detailed suggestions for arc flash mitigation and coordination improvements. Our field service team was then able to follow-up and complete these recommendations to give the customer a clean turnkey solution without dealing with multiple contractors.
